What is SOT-KST™?
The goal of KST is to give the patient individualized care! Your body is like a Bank Safe and we must Adjust/Correct your body in the combination it wants adjusted in so we can unlock your true healing potential!
Dr. Riner uses a combination of techniques that include SOT, AK, KST, and Nutritional Testing with an adjusting instrument called the Arthrostim™. Dr. Riner uses KST to bring all these techniques together to get amazing results.
Dr. Riner has taken special training in the use of the Arthrostim™ adjusting instrument. The Arthrostim™ gives the doctor's hand extended capability to target and control force more specifically to correct subluxations, distoritions, interferences and/or stress. These distortions in your body/nervous system interfere with your flow of energy and internal communication and adversley affect body function. KST quickly locates subluxations and releases them using the Arthrostim™, permitting your body/mind to function at a higher level of efficiency, harmony, communication and health.
The Arthrostim™ permits the doctor to accomplish better corrections or adjustments in a shorter time. In addition, corrections generally hold longer.
The first step, challenging, is part of the analysis procedure. In a relatively short period of time the entire structural system can be checked: skull, spine, discs, hips, ribs, sternum, shoulders, arms, legs, hands, feet – anything that is out of position can be analyzed.
The second step, checking, tells me if the body part is in its proper position. The base of the skull is used as a yes/no device.
Thus we have a binary or yes/no system telling us if an area needs or does not need to be corrected or adjusted. This system is akin to muscle testing (applied kinesiology or AK) wherein a muscle will become weak when confronted with a negative impulse.
Correcting, step three. When an adjustment is needed the area is corrected using the Arthrostim™ adjusting instrument.
The ArthroStim™ is an FDA approved instrument developed by IMPAC technology in Oregon. It has been continuously refined and perfected over its 22-year history. It introduces energy/force/information to the body to realign segments and remove nerve pressure at a speed of 12 “taps” per second (12 hertz); it is a fast, accurate, low force and controlled adjustment.
The ArthroStim™ gives patients a very specific adjustment, meaning that only the segment that is out of position is adjusted; there is no twisting, turning or “cracking” of joints. This technique permits adjusting in different postures.
This is very important because sometimes a problem can only be reproduced in a certain position. For example, a driver in a car accident (sitting) may not reveal their spinal damage or subluxations when standing; therefore they must be analyzed and corrected in the seated position. This is especially noticeable with people who suffer pain, neurological problems, TMJ and other conditions.
Adjusting people in the standing position has the added benefit of working with gravity. I don’t have to say, “OK, please stand up and see how you feel” because the patient is already standing. Their body can process the adjustment or correction immediately.
How Should a Patient Feel?
Most people report a feeling of ease, relaxation and well-being as their structural nerve stress (subluxations) releases/diminishes. Some people feel very relaxed and they should listen to their body and go home and sleep if at all possible.
The next day some people feel as if they’ve had a good workout, often in places they never knew they had. This is usually felt only after the first adjustment, is temporary and usually disappears within a short time.
People have many layers. After the correction of what the body is showing at the time, older injuries, older distortions, older subluxations and older symptoms (both physical and emotional) may surface to release. The release and healing of old injuries is known as “retracing” and is usually part of the healing process.
On occasion patients have reported “cleansing” symptoms such as diarrhea, pus, mucus, headache, fever, etc. as toxins leave the body. These symptoms are usually temporary. It is helpful to be told if unusual symptoms arise. These symptoms may take the form of emotional releases: old memories coming up or unusual dreams.
Sometimes an area is so weak and the distortion so extensive that a segment put in place may not stay in position and may need correcting again.

SOT® stands for Sacro-Occipital Technic. Sacro refers to the sacrum, which is the bottom part of the spinal column. Occipital refers to the occiput, which is the bone at the base of your skull. So SOT® focuses on the relationship between your sacrum and your occiput and how that relationship affects your overall functioning.
SOT® is a marriage of osteopathy (cranial and organ therapy) and chiropractic (spinal and extremity work). This Technique gives patients an advantage in their pursuit of wellness due to its comprehensive whole body nature.
SOT® was founded by Dr. DeJarnette, an engineer who was severely injured in the early 1920’s. He sought treatment from conventional medicine which failed to produce satisfactory results. The doctors who were able to help him were an Osteopath and a Chiropractor. He then went on to complete degrees in both chiropractic and osteopathy because he felt the combination was what helped him.
Dr. DeJarnette spent hours with each patient doing research. He found what he called 'indicators' which he was able to systematically correlate with imbalances in the patient. He discovered that after successful treatment these indicators diminished or disappeared.
He noted many significant relationships between different parts of the body, the most important of which is between the sacrum (tailbone area) and the occiput (back of the head), out of which developed Sacro-Occipital Technic.
SOT® encompasses seven systems.
The first three systems are called Category I, II, and III. Each category has indicators that help the doctor to determine what structural state the body is in, particularly the three different distortion patterns of the pelvis as it relates to the cranium. These indicators are found all over the body, so the whole body must be evaluated. No two patients are alike.
The fourth system relates to indicators on part of the trapezius muscle (the upper back) that determine if and where there are imbalances on the spine itself.
The fifth system is the occipital fiber system and Chiropractic Manipulative Reflex Technique (CMRT). The occipital fibers are indicators of organ imbalance in the body, which are corrected by CMRT. If both the organ and the spine are treated, the imbalance has a better chance of healing. Nutritional and lifestyle changes are often required to make lasting improvement.
The sixth system describes the gentle treatment of the cranium. The cranium consists of many bones connected by joints called sutures. During normal breathing, the small movement in these joints acts as a ‘pump’, circulating the fluid that surrounds the brain and the spinal cord (cerebrospinal fluid). This fluid needs to circulate freely for optimal health of the nervous system.
The seventh system includes treatment of the extremities, including feet, ankles, knees, hips, wrists, shoulders, elbows and hands. These structures are also subject to imbalances which can be corrected using SOT® adjustment techniques.
